A Health journey in Three Stages

Did you know there are three stages or phases of chiropractic care? They are: Relief, Corrective, and Elective/Wellness care. Our Foundations of Health Program is built on the idea that it’s easier to stay healthy than it is to get healthy, so our goal is to get every patient to that last stage.

However, we also know that chiropractic care is a journey, not a destination. Here’s a look at how we help patients through that journey with comfort and confidence.

The first stage is known as Relief, Initial, or Intensive Care. When patients come to us with substantial pain, we know they’re in this stage. There are a lot of things going on in the body—joint instability, nervous system dysfunction, inflammation, and loss of range of motion, just to name a few.

To help patients navigate this stage, we focus on frequent adjustments that may be combined with other procedures to help offer relief. Consistency—meaning frequent visits—is an important part of the process. Depending on a patient’s age, condition, lifestyle, and injury, repeated visits over weeks or months may be needed to reduce or eliminate symptoms.

The second stage is Corrective Care. Even when a patient feels better from the first set of treatments, muscle and other soft tissue issues can remain. To address these issues, we think of corrective care like orthodontics for the teeth: It helps restore proper position and motion of the spine’s vertebrae.

Corrective care works to stabilize the spine and muscles, which helps promote healing. During this phase, visit frequency is typically reduced and self-care procedures are often introduced. As spinal and muscular function improves, most patients feel they are at “pre-complaint” status. Stopping care now, however, may risk a relapse, so the third stage is essential.

Going through the first two stages of care leads us naturally to the third: Elective or Wellness Care.

Due to different stressors, lifestyles, or relapses, chiropractic checkups are recommended. These wellness visits can often help detect or prevent problems before they become serious, which would require the patient to repeat earlier phases. Elective or Wellness Care is a preventative measure that saves time and money by helping the body stay well. By maintaining good spinal health through chiropractic adjustments, the spine is stabilized and can better withstand the stressors that life throws at us every day.

We’ve found that once a patient makes it through the first two phases, twice a month visits or checkups seem to work the best for maintaining good spinal health. And with our Foundations of Health program, those visits are even more affordable.
